How Shopify fees work
Shopify is the odd one out on this site: it isn't a marketplace, so there's no commission on your sale price. But "Shopify fees" still confuse sellers because the real cost is three separate pieces that never appear on the same page of the pricing site. This Shopify fee calculator puts them in one result: your plan (amortized per order), the card rate for your plan, and the third-party transaction fee if you don't use Shopify Payments.
Part one: the subscription, per order
Basic runs $27.00/month on monthly billing ($20.00/mo annually), Grow $65.00/mo, Advanced $399.00/mo. A fixed fee is meaningless without volume, which is why the advanced inputs above ask for your monthly sales: at 50 orders a month, Basic costs $0.54 per order; at 500, a nickel. The plan question is never "is it expensive" — it's "expensive per order."
Part two: card processing, by plan
Every order pays Shopify Payments' card rate: 2.9% + 30¢ on Basic, 2.7% + 30¢ on Grow, 2.5% + 30¢ on Advanced (US online cards; international and Amex run about a point higher — toggle in the calculator). This is the piece that scales with your price, and it's the honest comparison to marketplace commissions: on a $100 sale, Basic processing is $3.20 where eBay takes $14.00.
Part three: the third-party fee trap
Bring your own payment gateway and Shopify adds its own transaction fee on every order — 2% on Basic, 1% on Grow, 0.6% on Advanced — on top of whatever your gateway charges you. Two payment fees stacked is almost never worth it; the checkbox above exists so you can see exactly how much that choice costs before you make it.
POS and in-person rates
Selling in person adds a fourth piece: POS Pro runs $89/month per location, and in-person card rates run lower than online (2.4–2.7% depending on plan) since fraud risk is lower. Pop-up sellers should model the POS subscription exactly like the online plan — a fixed cost that only makes sense amortized over real foot traffic.
What the trial actually costs
New stores typically get three days free then $1/month for three months — genuinely the cheapest way to test a product idea anywhere in e-commerce. Just know the trial's purpose: it's enough time to learn whether anyone clicks your checkout, not enough to build organic traffic. Budget the real plan price from month four when you forecast.
The real comparison: subscription vs commission
Marketplaces charge 10–20% of every sale and no subscription; Shopify charges the inverse. The crossover is arithmetic, not opinion: at 13.6% marketplace fees, a Basic plan pays for itself at about $200 in monthly sales — but that math ignores traffic, which marketplaces supply and Shopify doesn't. Fees alone say: cheap to run, yours to build an audience for. Start with the $1-for-3-months trial and measure real conversion before comparing percentages. And remember the fee advantage compounds with repeat customers: a marketplace charges its commission on the hundredth sale just like the first, while your Shopify plan stays flat — every returning customer you email for free widens the gap. That's the entire trade-off, quantified per order — which is what the calculator above exists for.
Shopify vs the marketplaces
On $50: Shopify Basic costs $1.75 in processing (plus plan amortization), Etsy $5.20, eBay $7.20, Poshmark $10. The gap is enormous — and it's the price of no built-in buyers. The strip under your result shows the same sale on the marketplaces; the all-platform comparator runs everything at once.

FAQ
How much does Shopify take per sale? ▾
No commission — Shopify is your own storefront, not a marketplace. You pay only card processing (2.9% + 30¢ on Basic) plus your plan. On a $100 sale that is $3.20, versus $13.60+ in marketplace fees on eBay. The catch: you bring your own traffic.
Is there a Shopify commission or referral fee? ▾
None. Shopify does not take a cut of your sale price. What you pay is the subscription, the card processing rate for your plan, and — only if you use a third-party payment gateway instead of Shopify Payments — an extra transaction fee of 2%/1%/0.6% by plan.
What are Shopify third-party transaction fees? ▾
If you accept payments through an outside gateway (your own Stripe/PayPal account) instead of Shopify Payments, Shopify adds its own fee on every order: 2% on Basic, 1% on Grow, 0.6% on Advanced — on top of whatever your gateway charges. Using Shopify Payments avoids it entirely.
How much does Shopify cost per month in 2026? ▾
Basic is $27.00/month monthly ($20.00/month paid yearly), Grow $65.00/mo, Advanced $399.00/mo. New stores typically start with a $1-for-3-months trial. Enter your monthly sales in advanced inputs to see the plan cost per order.
Is there a free way to sell without Shopify fees? ▾
Shopify never takes a percentage of sales, but the plan itself costs money — marketplaces are the reverse (no subscription, big commission). Below roughly $1,000/month in sales, marketplace fees often cost less than the subscription; above it, owning the channel usually wins. Run both in the comparator.
