How Etsy fees work

Most Etsy fees calculators show you one blurry percentage. This one shows every line Etsy will actually deduct, because the real answer to "how much does Etsy take" is always three fees stacked together — plus two more that only apply in specific situations. If you were looking for an Etsy fees calculator with the rates dated and explained, this is the whole picture.

The three core fees on every sale

  • Listing fee — $0.20 per listing. Charged when you publish (or renew) a listing and covers four months. If the item sells, relisting or auto-renewing triggers another $0.20. On multi-quantity listings, each sale after the first auto-renews at $0.20.
  • Transaction fee — 6.5% of the order. This is Etsy's main cut. The part sellers get wrong: the 6.5% applies to the item price plus the shipping you charge the buyer (and gift wrap, if any). Charge $8 shipping and Etsy takes 6.5% of that $8 too.
  • Payment processing — 3% + $0.25 for US sellers. Charged by Etsy Payments on the order total including tax. Rates vary by country — the calculator uses the US rate; Etsy's help center lists the per-country table.

The fee base: what Etsy actually charges on

The single biggest miscalculation sellers make is applying 6.5% to the item price only. Etsy's transaction fee base is item price + shipping charged + gift wrap, and the processing fee base is the full order total including sales tax that Etsy collects and remits. On a $30 item with $5 shipping, your transaction fee is 6.5% of $35, not $30 — that's a $0.33 difference on one sale, and real money across a year.

A quick worked example: on a $40 item with $6 shipping and 8% sales tax, the transaction fee is 6.5% of $46 ($2.99), the processing fee is 3% + $0.25 of $49.68 ($1.74), and with the $0.20 listing fee Etsy keeps $4.93 in total — about 10.7% of the order. Run your own numbers in the calculator above; every line shows its arithmetic, so you can always check our math against Etsy's official policy.

Offsite Ads: the fee that surprises sellers

If Etsy attributes a sale to its offsite advertising (Google, social, publisher placements), it deducts an additional 15% of the order total — item, shipping, and tax included. Sellers who made under $10,000 in the past 365 days can opt out of Offsite Ads entirely. Once you cross $10,000, participation is mandatory for the lifetime of the shop, but the rate drops to 12%. Use the Offsite Ads toggle in the calculator to see both scenarios before you price.

Regulatory operating fee (some countries)

Sellers in the UK, France, Italy, Spain, and Turkey pay an additional regulatory operating fee — a small percentage (roughly 0.3%–1.1% depending on country) on the order. It does not apply to US sellers, but if you sell internationally from one of those countries, open the advanced inputs above and pick your country to include it.

What about Etsy Ads?

On-site Etsy Ads are pay-per-click with a daily budget you set, so they can't be expressed as a per-sale fee — that's a marketing expense, not a commission. This calculator covers the fees Etsy deducts from a sale; treat ad spend separately when you model profit. A useful discipline: watch your ads' effective take rate (ad spend ÷ ad-attributed revenue) — if it exceeds your margin minus the ~10.6% Etsy stack, the campaign is buying losses.

Currency conversion: the quiet 2.5%

If your shop's currency differs from the buyer's payment currency, Etsy adds a 2.5% currency conversion fee on the order total. US sellers listing in USD who sell to US buyers never see it; the moment you sell internationally in a mismatched currency, it's there. Price international listings with the extra 2.5% in mind or harmonize your shop currency with your main market.

Etsy Plus and Pattern: subscriptions on top

Etsy Plus ($10/month) buys listing credits (15 listings) and $5 of ad credit monthly — worth it only if you'd spend that much on listings and ads anyway. Pattern ($15/month) is Etsy's standalone website builder — a different product entirely, competing with Shopify's entry tier, not with marketplaces. Neither changes the per-sale fee stack; both are optional.

Worked example: the $80 order with and without ads

An $80 item with $8 buyer-paid shipping, organic sale: listing $0.20 + transaction 6.5% of $88 ($5.72) + processing 3% + $0.25 of the total ($2.89) — Etsy keeps $8.81, you keep $79.19 before costs (an 89% keep rate). Same order through an Offsite Ad at 15%: add $13.20, and your keep drops to $65.99 — 75%. The ~10.6% baseline and the ~21% ad-attributed rate are different businesses; know which one each listing lives in.

Why the effective rate lands near 10–11%

Sellers quote Etsy's take as "6.5%" and feel deceived by their statements. The full stack — $0.20 listing, 6.5% transaction on item+shipping, 3% + $0.25 processing — compounds to roughly 10–11% of a typical US order before any ad spend. That's still cheaper than Poshmark's 20% and roughly level with eBay's 13.6% + $0.40 at small ticket sizes, but it is never 6.5%. Every figure in this section renders from the same verified rate file the calculator uses — the badge under your result shows the verification date.

Etsy fees vs other platforms

Etsy's effective cut lands around 10–11% before ads — cheaper than Poshmark's 20%, roughly level with eBay's 13.6% final value fee on lower-priced items, and more than Mercari's flat 10% or Depop's zero-commission model. The honest answer depends on your price point and shipping, which is why every result above ends with a same-item comparison across platforms.
