Mercari Brought Back Selling Fees — but Smarter This Time

What changed

On January 6, 2025, Mercari ended its ten-month experiment and restored a seller fee — a flat 10% on the item price plus buyer-paid shipping. Two things make it different from the pre-2024 model it replaced: the old 2.9% + $0.50 payment processing fee is gone (folded into the 10%), and buyers kept paying a ~3.6% protection fee.

Why most sellers pay less than before 2024

The math surprises people: the pre-2024 model charged 10% plus 2.9% + $0.50 — $4.37 on a $30 sale. Today's flat 10% is $3.00. Despite the drama of "fees are back," the reset quietly left most sellers better off than the old normal. The losers: sellers of very cheap items, for whom the old fixed 50¢ stung less than a pure percentage, and anyone whose pricing never adjusted to the 2024 interlude.

Why guides still disagree

Three fee regimes in two years — 10% + processing, zero, flat 10% — means the internet is full of contradictory Mercari advice, all of it "correct" once. Check the date on anything you read; if a calculator adds a processing line on top of the 10%, it's pre-2025 and will understate your payout by about 3 points.

  • Re-price anything you listed during the zero-fee window — your 2024 margins assumed no seller fee.
  • Model shipping honestly: the 10% applies to buyer-paid shipping too.
  • Compare the same item across platforms in our comparator before assuming Mercari wins — Depop and Vinted undercut it seller-side.
